At Sasekani Magaza Multipurpose Primary Cooperative Limited, we believe the future of farming doesn’t begin on the land—it begins in the classroom, the household, and the community. Our cooperative is building an inclusive, holistic approach to empowerment, bridging generational and socio-economic gaps by reimagining how education and agricultural security can transform lives, especially in underserved rural areas. Through early education, agrientrepreneurship pathways, and innovative income-generating initiatives like our Cassava-Tree-Chain™, we are planting seeds of hope and harvesting dignity for the present and future.

“When a child learns to plant, a community learns to thrive.”
This quote reflects our guiding philosophy—that education in agriculture is education in self-reliance, resilience, and renewal.

🌱 Green Fingers: Growing Futures from the Classroom

We begin where it matters most: with the next generation. Our Green Fingers initiative introduces primary school learners to farming not just as a subject, but as a lifestyle. Through hands-on gardening, composting, and seedling care, children begin to see agriculture as the lifeblood of their community’s wellbeing. This early exposure fosters a respect for food systems, environmental stewardship, and the dignity of working with the land.

Rather than wait until career choices are made, we embed farming values early—reigniting pride in rural traditions while equipping learners with modern eco-conscious practices. These lessons grow beyond the classroom, with families and teachers participating in school gardens, food security drives, and agro-clubs that tie learning directly to local nutrition and income needs.

🌾 Agrientrepreneurship: A Lifeline Beyond Matric

For many rural learners, failing Grade 12 marks not just academic disappointment, but the end of hope. Sasekani Magaza flips this narrative by offering agrientrepreneurship as an exit package for youth who may not pursue tertiary studies.

Through workshops, mentorship, access to starter packs, and cooperative ownership models, we help these youth establish small agribusinesses in areas like:

  • Cassava processing and packaging
  • Organic vegetable production
  • Poultry and small livestock rearing
  • Herbal teas, oils, and fermented fruit beverages
  • Digital agri-marketing and traceability services

Rather than becoming another statistic of rural unemployment, these young people become landowners, producers, and innovators—rooted in community and growing for the future.

👩‍🌾 Closing the Gap: Supporting Adults Left Behind

There’s a forgotten demographic in our social development system: adults between 35 and 59 years old who fall outside government grants and job opportunities. At Sasekani Magaza, we’ve recognized this gap—and filled it with green economy inclusion.

Through our Cassava-Tree-Chain™, adults can register and tag their fruit trees—especially mango and cassava—for inclusion in our blockchain-based traceability and trading system. This system allows tree owners to:

  • Sell fresh fruit for puree production
  • Market green mangoes for atchar relish
  • Convert overripe fruit into jam, fermented alcohol, or pyrolysis feedstock
  • Earn income from carbon sequestration by trading Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs)

By turning trees into assets, we give these individuals a new lease on life—income without dependence, and dignity without charity.

🛡️ Education Meets Insurance

Education alone is not enough without security. That’s why we are working to integrate community-based micro-insurance models for our farmers and cooperative members. Whether it’s protecting crops against climate shocks, securing equipment, or insuring against income loss, we aim to build resilience from the ground up—because empowered farmers deserve both opportunity and safety.

🌍 Wrapping Up with Key Insights

Empowerment must be generational, inclusive, and rooted in the realities of rural life. At Sasekani Magaza, we don’t see education and farming as separate worlds—they are two sides of the same seed. From school gardens to agrientrepreneur hubs, from women-led tree economies to blockchain-enabled carbon credits, we are showing that rural innovation is not only possible, it’s essential.

By nurturing people at every stage of life and creating real, traceable value from the soil, we are building not just food systems, but futures. Because when farmers are educated, insured, and included—communities rise, and a greener tomorrow becomes inevitable.
